I begin each painting by making a photograph, so that I can choose the light and composition through the lens of my camera. From there I translate the image to the canvas with my oils. Part of what draws me to paint is this challenge of translation, stretching and growing my technical skills. My main drive, however, is the catharsis and insight that comes from the process – being present and focused, surrendering to the flow, and finding the courage to work through difficult emotions like fear and self-doubt. I find wholeness through my painting, and it keeps me committed to exploring the edges of what I am capable of.
